My early Christmas present

Mom got me a chef's hat and jacket for Christmas!
She knows I love to cook and in the Nutcracker I'm one of the chefs.

Here is a picture of me drinking sorrel while I'm in my new chef's outfit.

I can't wait to help cook Christmas dinner!

This Season's First Nutcracker Performance!

Last night was my first Nutcracker Performance of the 2014-2015 season.
It was quite warm outside (about 4C) and the snow was starting to melt. For other performances there was quite a lot of snow outside so this was different.

Mom, Dad and I tried to take a picture outside but we're not good at taking selfies.
They told me they were going out for dinner at a Raw Vegan Restaurant. I definitely prefer performing!

I got to the Four Seasons Centre early and the chaperones were there. I changed into my ballet clothes and hung out in the Karen Kain Studio with the other kids. We chatted and we ate our snacks. There are screens backstage where we can watch what is going on on stage so we could watch the performance too.

My roles were in the second act. We put on our costumes... For the guard costume it was pants, shoes, spats, goatee and then our jackets and hats. It was really cool!
I looked just like my Uncle J when I had on my goatee!

We went on stage with our halberds to protect the Sugar Plum Fairy. We are like the Queen's Guards.

We have a quick costume change and we get to put on our big chef costumes. It's a more comedic role. We go out on stage trying to catch a chicken that keeps getting away. We run up and down stairs and then we run out with our utensils.

After that we proudly present our food and Misha and Marie have a food fight!
We clean up the food and then we're off stage for a while.

We come back on stage just before the Sugar Plum Fairy and Peter go into the huge faberge egg together and also for the curtain call.

Guillaume Côté was our Peter for this performance. He hurt his knee and Keiichi Hirano finished out the performance. I really hope that Guillaume Côté recovers quickly! He is such an amazing dancer and he's also a musician.

Here is a picture of me when I was leaving the theatre.
Mom and Dad actually watched the show!!!  They completely fooled me. It was such a nice surprise.

They also gave me a Nutcracker. :-)

Final Rehearsals for The Nutcracker

This week we had our final rehearsals for the National Ballet of Canada's "The Nutcracker". We had some rehearsals at the Walter Carsen Centre and the last rehearsals were at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The Choreographer - James Kudelka watched as we rehearsed. Sometimes he even corrected us. It was so cool!!

When I was a mouse I knew how amazing it was to be a part of The Nutcracker.
Now I realize just how amazing it is to be around so many talented people! People who run the rehearsals, work on the sets, make the costumes, put on make up, play the music, organize everybody & everything, and of course, the dancers. The beautiful ballet is final product of the teamwork of all of these super-talented people.

It snowed a lot this week. But that doesn't stop rehearsals or performances.
Here are some pictures from outside the Four Seasons Centre.

Before and after my rehearsals I studied for my Intermediate Theory Exam.
I had my exam yesterday morning. I even finished it early.

Last night at the Orchestra Dress Rehearsal we had a full audience so it was really like a performance. I volunteered to substitute for a baby mouse who was late. I was glad to help out and I also got to do my own roles of chef and guard. It was so much fun!
I was on stage in both acts! I just love being on stage.

I would like to thank Miss Toto, Mr. Kastoff and everybody else at the National Ballet School for letting me be a part of such a wonderful production. I would also like to thank Mr. Kudelka for choreographing such a beautiful ballet!

The Nutcracker!

Guess what!
I'm in The National Ballet of Canada's "The Nutcracker" again this year!
I'm going to be a chef and a guard.

I'm one of 4 Associate Program students in the roles of chef and guard. I'm not sure why they chose me but I'm happy they did. I don't think I'm the most talented but I work very hard and I'm focussed. :-)

Today we had our costume fittings at the Walter Carsen Centre.

We have a few rehearsals left.
I can't wait for the performances!

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!

I will be performing on:
Saturday, December 13 at 7pm
Wednesday, December 17 at 7pm
Friday, December 19 at 7pm
Sunday, December 21 at 5:30pm

& Saturday, January 3 at 1pm

TSO's Romeo and Juliet with Stéphane Denève

Mom and I went to our first TSO concert this season.

Stéphane Denève conducted 139 musicians from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra.  81 of them were from the TSYO.
I have never seen so many double basses on stage at the same time before!

I have seen Stéphane Denève  conduct the TSO before and I think he is amazing. I had no idea that he worked with younger musicians too!

My favourite piece from the program was the Marche Slave, Op 31 by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It was spectacular! I could listen to it over and over again!!!

Nicola Benedetti was our Violin Soloist. She played Dmitri Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 99 (1955 revision of Op. 77). It was super cool! It had an unusual structure... It was "slow-fast-slow-fast" instead of the normal "fast-slow-fast". It was the first time I have ever heard the celesta do something that was not light and airy. I have learnt a lot about Stalin and the way he treated artists and musicians. It must have been very hard for musicians like Shostakovich when he didn't like them.

Nicola Benedetti was wonderful! And she even performed an arrangement of the original Auld Lang Syne for us as an encore! It was short but it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

I loved the excerpts from Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. Of course my favourite part of it was the Montagues and Capulets. It's so much more dramatic in person with the full orchestra! I can just imagine what it would be like with a full ballet!

After the concert, we got to meet the conductor!

He was very nice and we talked a little about the instruments that I'm learning how to play.

Toronto Get Out and Vote!

Today, I went with my Mom when she went to vote. She decided to vote in the advance polls.

Election Day is October 27th and adults who are Canadian citizens and who are residents of Toronto can vote. (Advance polls are open until October 19th.)

When we went in, they looked at her ID and her voter information card. Then they sent her to an election official who gave her the right ballot that had the candidates for Mayor, Member of City Council and the School Trustee. (There are different ballots based on the school board. There is the Toronto District School Board, the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the Conseil Scolaire Viamonde & the Conseil scolaire de district catholique.)

The ballot is quite big! There were tonnes of names of people running for Mayor! There are 65 Mayoral candidates.

The election official explained how to mark the ballot and then put it in a secrecy folder so she could keep her ballot in private. There is a place where she could sit and mark the ballot.  She wouldn't even let me see how she voted.

After she voted for who she wants for all three positions she put it back into the secrecy folder and carried it to the Tabulator. The tabulator scanned the ballot and it said vote was accepted and it even said 'Thank you for voting' afterwards.

I can't wait to see the election results!

It's been a long time!

It has been a really long time since I blogged but I've been super-busy!

This weekend Mom and I did a First Aid Course.
I did really well!

A long time ago I learnt how to use an Epipen and I practiced on a piece of fruit. I don't have any allergies but some people I know do. It's part of the reason why I wanted to learn First Aid.

I got to volunteer a lot and do a lot of scenarios.
We practiced CPR on adults, children and infants and we learnt how to deal with choking. We also learnt about burns, poisons, diabetic emergencies, bleeding, splints & slings and lots of other stuff.

The best thing about doing the First Aid Course is that I'll know what to do in an emergency and I will be able to help if it's even to call 911 or find an AED.

My parents are super-proud of me!
Happy Thanksgiving!
